As a startup, you have to know who your audience is, and what they’re seeking as well as who’s influencing them, before you can ever start to think about Search Engine Optimization. And the reason that is, because you need to know what keywords and terms and phrases, what types of content, what kinds of questions does your audience have and what could you answer on your website.
And then you can go through the process of SEO, saying like, “Hey, we think search is going to be a big channel because a lot of people are looking for this information and there’s a ton of opportunity here and not much competition, or the other way around – it’s very heavily competitive, there’s not a lot of searchers, we think we should go after social, content, email, paid media or some other channel.” And I think that’s totally fine.
Once you make that decision, you can then start the process of SEO, of thinking about keyword research and content creation, keyword targeting, link building, amplification, engagement and all that other stuff.
